Giedrė Šabasevičiūtė je vědecká pracovnice Orientálního ústavu Akademie věd České republiky a přidružená výzkumnice v CEDEJ v Káhiře. Vystudovala sociologii (EHESS, 2015) a ve svém výzkumu se zaměřuje na okrajové literární a intelektuální komunity v Egyptě, které zkoumá prostřednictvím studia praktik a míst společenského života, které je podporují. Ve svém předchozím projektu se zabývala egyptským literátem a islámským aktivistou Sayyidem Qutbem (1906–1966) a zkoumala, jak byl arabský intelektuální kánon konstruován v opozici k literárním kulturám, které byly kvůli svému náboženskému charakteru považovány za zastaralé. Projekt, založený na archivním výzkumu, si kladl za cíl odhalit autorovy vztahy a místa intelektuální společenskosti v meziválečném Egyptě a ukázat, jak se v průběhu jeho kariéry měnily a nakonec vedly k jeho vyloučení z oficiálních dějin egyptské intelektuální scény. Výsledkem této práce je publikace Sayyid Qutb: An Intellectual Biography (Syracuse University Press, 2021).

Ve svém současném výzkumu se nadále zajímá o okrajové literární kultury mimo zavedené kruhy a zaměřuje se na amatérské literární komunity v Káhiře, které vznikly v rámci společenství literárních klubů. Prostřednictvím literárního klubu zkoumá, jak psaní a vydávání beletrie, stejně jako účast v literárních klubech, otevírají nové životní možnosti pro Egypťany středního věku žijící v postrevolučním režimu. Tento výzkum, jehož pracovní název je Enchanted Lives: Midlife and Literary Self-Making in Cairo (Okouzlené životy: střední věk a literární seberealizace v Káhiře), bude publikován jako monografie nakladatelstvím Syracuse University Press. Její práce byly publikovány v International Journal of Middle East Studies, Middle East Critique, Journal of Middle East Women‘s Studies, Middle East – Topics & Arguments, L‘Année du Maghreb, Critique Internationale a Egypte, Soudan, Mondes Arabes (ESMA). Publikovala také kapitoly v editovaných svazcích.

V příštích dvou letech (2026–2028) bude v rámci programu Tandem AV ČR-CNRS spolupracovat s Hélène Martinelli (ENS Lyon) a Alim Al-Moussaouim (Univerzita Karlova) na projektu Papírové vazby: Tvořit knihy pro příbuzné, přátele a sebe sama v současné Evropě a na Blízkém východě.

V rámci tohoto projektu se bude zabývat praktikami vlastního vydávání marginalizovaných literárních komunit v Káhiře.
