Bohdan Shumylovych obtained a master’s degree in modern history from the Central European University (Budapest, Hungary, 2004-2005) and a diploma in art history from the L’viv Academy of Arts (Ukraine, 1993-1999). In 2020, he received a Ph.D. from the European University Institute in Florence. He was a fellow of several grant programs and worked with the archive of the Faculty of Visual Arts at George Washington University, Washington (USA), and the archive of Open Society Institute (www.osaarchivum.org) in Budapest.
At the Center for Urban History (L’viv), he co-manages the Public history program, gives lectures, participates in the development of the Centre for Urban History’s thematic exhibitions, and carries out research. In his work, he combines history and art history, and as a public historian, he created many exhibitions. At the Center for Urban History, he started Urban Video collections (2008-2011) and became the head of the Urban Media Archive (2011-2019), later turning to Public History projects (2020-2022) and concentrating more on research. At Ukrainian Catholic University, he teaches courses in visual studies and aesthetics, leads the visual laboratory, and coordinates research seminars for BA students. The main focus of his work is media history in East Central Europe and the Soviet Union, as well as media arts, visual studies, urban spatial practices, and urban creativity.
Since the beginning of the Russian war against Ukraine in 2022, he started collecting diaries and ego documents of war, with an important focus on dreams. In 2024 he will focus more on shifts in nightlife during the war and urban temporalities.
