Embracing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) through Art
in Culturally Responsive Teaching

Research  Area 2: Norms and Transgressions

Natalia Marakhovska, an Associate Professor in the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology at Mariupol State University, relocated to Kyiv, Ukraine, joins CEFRES for 2024. She is a team member of the Erasmus+ project BELONG (Better Education through Long-term Investment into Inclusiveness and Student and Staff Wellbeing) at the Competence Development Centre of Masaryk University, Brno.

Beyond her teaching and research activities, Dr. Marakhovska designs and facilitates workshops – both online and offline – for Ukrainian refugees and the international academic community. Her workshop themes encompass visual culture, integrating art into diverse learning areas, culturally responsive classroom environments, immersive art practices for inclusive teaching, overcoming stereotypes and promoting inclusivity and cultural responsiveness through art. Her academic interests lie in teacher training and leadership development, inclusive teaching and arts-based pedagogies.

Dr. Marakhovska’s project at CEFRES, titled “Embracing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) through Art in Culturally Responsive Teaching”, aligns with CEFRES Research Area 2. This project explores how culturally responsive teaching and immersive art practices can empower war-affected individuals. By utilising art as a tool for challenging traditional educational norms and fostering inclusivity, the project aims to mitigate the negative impacts of displacement, expand cultural horizons, and facilitate the acquisition of new knowledge and experiences related to EDI, freedom of expression and multiculturality.
