Vasyl Derevinskyj je doktorem historie a profesorem na Oddělení politické vědy a práva na Kyjevské národní univerzitě stavebnictví a architektury. Působí jako výzkumník historie ukrajinského boje za svobodu jednotlivce i národa ve 20. století. Dále se zabývá národnostní politikou a biografiemi.

Je autorem několika knih o Vjačeslavu Čornovilovi – slavnému ukrajinskému politikovi, státníkovi a editorovi textů literárního undergroundu. Čornovil byl politickým vězněm v Sovětském svazu od šedesátých do osmdmdesátých let a v letech devadesátých se stal předsedou Ukrajinské národní demokratické strany.

Od roku 2013 Vasyl Derevinskyj organizuje vědecké fórum „Čornovilova čtení“, jež bylo založeno na počest stejnojmenného autora. Fórum je prostorem pro diskuzi o historických i současných tématech. Kvůli válce, jež Rusko rozpoutalo v plném měřítku v únoru 2022, nebylo toho roku možné fórum pořádat (fórum se tehdy mělo jmenovat Tisk jako zbraň proti tisku). Vasyl Derevinskyj se rovněž podílel na organizaci dalších vědeckých konferencí.

Od roku 2016 je garantem Ph.D. studijního programu v oboru 032 „Historie a archeologie“ na Kyjevské národní univerzitě stavebnictví a architektury. Tento program má akreditaci ukrajinské Národní agentury pro hodnocení kvality vyššího vzdělávání.

Byl vedoucím pěti disertačních prací, které byly úspěšně obhájeny.

Byl členem odborné akademické rady K 26.126.01 pro obhajobu prací pro obdržení titulu kandidát historických věd. Tato rada fungovala v rámci Národního výzkumného institutu ukrajinských studií v letech 2015–2017. Při obhajobách těchto prací působil rovněž jako oponent.

Je členem redakčních rad vědeckých periodik „Ukrajinská věda: minulost, současnost, budoucnost“ (2014), „Vědecký věstník Národního muzea historie Ukrajiny“ (2016–2019) a vydání „Historie, ekonomie a filosofie“ časopisu „Bulletion Kyjevské národní lingvistické univerzity,“ (2022–2023).

Je členem Národní unie regionálních historiků Ukrajiny.
