CFA: one funded PhD Position – “Justice, law and politics of history in Central Europe and/or South East Asia”

Sciences Po Paris is looking for a PhD Candidate to join the “Justice, law and politics of history in Central Europe and/or South East Asia” project funded by the CNRS.

This doctoral thesis will question, from a multidisciplinary perspective, the relationships between justice, law and history (the latter being considered as a sector of public action). The research work may contribute to a diversity of fields, including the sociology of knowledge, the sociology of the public uses of the past and/or the sociology of public action. A consideration of issues of temporalities and spatial differences will be needed. The project should lie at the intersection between political science, history and area studies. Mastering one of the Central European languages is requested, and if fieldwork includes a country in Asia, the idiom of this country should also be mastered.

A least three issues will be explored: the judicial writing of history; historians in the courtroom; the place of judicial matters in the public policies of history – in particular war crime trials and/or trials against political opponents. A consideration of the legal and institutional frameworks within which history is written will combine with a reflection on the political and social uses of history.

In the selection of case studies and the devising of research methods, the student will build upon the literature on entangled history, connected histories, and global history. The time frame of the topic will be closely tied to the construction of cases. Empirical research may focus on any segment of the 20th century.

Working Environment

The selected candidate will enrol in Sciences Po Paris’ doctoral programme and will be part of the Political science doctoral school. The doctoral student will work within the Center for International studies (CERI Sciences Po), CNRS, UMR 7050.

CERI is a multidisciplinary centre for research in the social sciences and humanities that brings together specialists of Russia, Central and Southeast Europe, and Asia – among others.

The PhD will be supervised by Dr. Habil. Nadège Ragaru, Sciences Po (CERI-CNRS).

The doctoral student will take part on the collective life and research activities of the center. 

Constraints and Risks

The doctoral contract includes an obligation to conduct fieldwork. The doctoral student will spend at least three months per year doing field research in order to collect empirical data (through participant observation, interviews, etc.). During these periods, the student will be hosted by the Centre français de recherches en sciences sociales (CEFRES), in Prague, Czech Republic. CEFRES is part of the network of French research institutes abroad (UMIFRE). It offers administrative and logistical support and constitutes a stimulating scientific environment, connected with both local and regional research networks. Depending on the case studies chosen, fieldwork in other countries may be required.

Profile

  • The candidate must hold a Master’s Degree in social sciences (history, anthropology, sociology, political science) with a specialization in Central and Southeast European studies and/or South Asian area studies. He/she must not be enrolled in another doctoral programme. Mastering one of the languages of Central Europe, Southern Europe and Eastern Europe is requested, and if fieldwork includes a country in Asia, the idiom of this country must also be known.
  • The doctoral thesis can be written in French or in English.

Conditions

  • The PhD is funded. The selected PhD candidate will sign a “contrat doctoral” granting 2135 euros (gross salary) per month for a period of three years from 1st of October 2019 to 30th of September 2022.
  • The PhD is funded by the CNRS and is a CNRS doctoral contract.
  • The PhD candidate will conduct his or her work based at the CERI – Sciences Po in Paris, France.

Post-Doctoral Position in Anthropology and Related Disciplines at the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague

We are looking for a postdoctoral research fellow who would enrich
our international Prague-based team working on the project titled Bewildering Boar: Changing Cosmopolitics of the Hunt in Europe and Beyond.

Eurasian wild pigs (Sus scrofa) feature regularly in European public discourse, for their numbers have been rising spectacularly across the continent. While in some parts of Europe this by now synanthropic species generates sympathy, in other places humans have declared war on wild boars for causing extensive damage to landscapes, agriculture, transportation networks and so on. In this context we are asking how the Eurasian wild pig has featured in human lives, and vice versa, in dynamically changing socio-environmental contexts. We expect our new colleague to join our efforts in focusing empirically on human-pig (wild or domestic) relations. We are open-minded and ready to take on board any relevant perspective from anthropology of science to legal anthropology or indeed from related disciplines. Eligibility

The candidate should have obtained her/his PhD degree in anthropology or another closely related fieldno earlier than 30 September 2016 and no later than 30 September 2018. (Exception could apply to those who spent time at parental leave or placement abroad – relative to the country where they received their PhD.) Please get in touch to consult the details.

We expect the successful candidate to reside in Prague and pursue the fieldwork anywhere in Europe or beyond. Note however, that our research funds are limited and you might need to rise extra research funding.

The Summer Seminar on Nationalism, Religion and Violence is ready to launch its sixth year with a special focus on the topics of ethnic and religious diversity, migration and transformation. A key goal of the Summer Seminar is to contribute to the study of violence in a substantial way and to catalyze the growth of the study of violence as a field.
The seminar targets highly motivated students, particularly graduate students, as well as post-docs and professional activists. It is led by international researchers from universities with an excellent reputation, such as the Humboldt University of Berlin, Central European University (Budapest), the University of Birmingham, the University of Manchester, the University of Pennsylvania, Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest) and the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The program involves fieldwork designed in cooperation with research centers and international institutions in Prague and beyond.
Participants may receive a certificate of attendance and 8 ECTS credits for their active participation in the program once the assignments are fulfilled. Since degree requirements vary among universities, students/graduates are advised to ensure, preferably in advance, that their college or university will recognize such certification and award the suggested credits.
The peer-reviewed journal JNMLP agreed to consider the publication of a special issue including the best academic papers submitted upon completion of the Summer Seminar.

A limited number of tuition fee discounts will be available for selected candidates based on their academic merit and financial needs.

CfA: Two Post-Doctoral Positions at CEFRES – Charles University

TWO POST-DOCTORAL POSITIONS AT CEFRES COFUNDED BY THE CHARLES UNIVERSITY AND CEFRES WITHIN THE FRAME OF SPECIFIC RESEARCH PROJECTS

Selected post-doctoral researchers will be informed on 2 October 2017. 

Two post-doctoral researchers will be recruited from 1 January 2018 at CEFRES with the support of the Charles University. They will be both affiliated to CEFRES and to a relevant department at Charles University. Each one will work on their individual research and in cooperation with a senior researcher of the center within the frame of a collective research project. Applicants must select one of the projects below.
Both post-doctoral researchers will be recruited on the basis of the quality of the research they conduct and their befitting the research programs they intend to join.
Research project 1: “Archives and Interculturality”
This research project will associate one post-doctoral researcher with CNRS researcher Benedetta Zaccarello.
Description: Candidates should be trained on and familiar with research on autograph manuscripts, notably on archives relevant to philosophy and the history of thought. We encourage applicants whose approach emphasizes the historical, textual and intercultural value of those documents, focusing on multilingual corpus inspired by or dealing with different traditions, both in space and time. An interdisciplinary approach is preferred, as well as some experience in the field of the edition of unpublished texts and in the methodology of genetic criticism.

Research project 2. TANDEM post-doctoral position

A specific competition to recruit a second post-doctoral researcher is open for competition on one out of three possible topics listed below. He/She will work in association with a researcher from the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) within the frame of the TANDEM program.

Topic 1: “Cosmopolitics of Hunt: Bringing Europe into Perspective”

This research project will associate one post-doctoral researcher with CAS researcher Luděk Brož.
Description: Candidates across social sciences and humanities are invited to explore how “wild species” have featured in human lives, and vice versa, in dynamically changing socio-environmental contexts. Successful applicants are expected to develop their own niche of empirical inquiry and, using methodology aligned with their respective disciplines, focus on “wild species” – human relationships as both a topic in its own right, and a strategic viewpoint on other issues of social and academic relevance. The supported candidate should be ready to engage in reflexive interdisciplinary collaboration.

Topic 2: “Denaturalisation and refugees in Europe in the first half of the 20th century”
This research project will associate one post-doctoral researcher with CAS researcher Michal Frankl.
Description: The project aims to develop a comparative perspective on large-scale denaturalisations in Europe in the first half of the 20th century and to probe the intrinsic connection between the status of the citizen and the position of the refugee. The applicant will show interest into research on citizenship, statelessness and/or refugees and should have background in historical and archival research (but an interdisciplinary combination with related disciplines is also possible and encouraged). Within the project s/he will be tasked with assessing existing body of research, working with the PI to develop the project methodology and conducting original research on mass revocations of citizenship and refugee policies. S/he should demonstrate interest in comparative history and explain his/her ability to contribute to a European comparative project (for instance, but not limited to, knowledge of the French and/or other national/regional contexts and languages).

Topic 3: “Islamic Activists in Exile: Europe, Middle East and South-Asia”

This research project will associate one post-doctoral researcher with CAS researcher Giedre Sabaseviciute.
Description: Candidates will be expected to contribute to the project on the contemporary exiled Islamic activists in European, Middle Eastern and South-Asian cities. The project aims to research the ways in which the experience of exile affect the trajectories of activism, focusing on how different national context influence their career choices, which vary between the continuation of activism, involvement into different causes, or disengagement. Possible research topics include but are not restricted to 1- circulation of ideas, norms and activism through human networks; 2- patterns of activist network formation; 3- relationship between the exiled activists and their host countries; 4- continuities and ruptures in individual trajectories of activism. Candidates are expected to have conducted their doctoral research in one of the regions covered by the project (The Gulf, Turkey, South-Asia), to be proficient of one of its languages (Turkish, Arabic, Malay), and have an important knowledge of the fieldwork. Interdisciplinary approach is preferred, as well as some experience in ethnographic and biographical research, media studies, and discourse analysis.

Framework of the Charles University and CEFRES post-doctoral position

As a partner of CEFRES Platform, Charles University recruits two high-quality post-doctoral research fellows from abroad, to become researchers at CEFRES, within the frame of the Charles University’s International Post-Doc Research Fund. The gross monthly salary is 32 000 CZK and a fixed-term contract will be signed between each post-doctoral researcher and CEFRES. UK-CEFRES post-doctoral researchers will be affiliated to both CEFRES and a relevant department of one of the faculties in social sciences and humanities of the Charles University according to their main discipline.
They are expected to:
  • contribute through their own research to the research project they apply to
  • take part in the scientific life of CEFRES
  • submit a yearly report on their research to the director of CEFRES
  • come to live in Prague from 1 January 2018.
