CFA: one funded PhD Position – “Justice, law and politics of history in Central Europe and/or South East Asia”

Sciences Po Paris is looking for a PhD Candidate to join the “Justice, law and politics of history in Central Europe and/or South East Asia” project funded by the CNRS.

This doctoral thesis will question, from a multidisciplinary perspective, the relationships between justice, law and history (the latter being considered as a sector of public action). The research work may contribute to a diversity of fields, including the sociology of knowledge, the sociology of the public uses of the past and/or the sociology of public action. A consideration of issues of temporalities and spatial differences will be needed. The project should lie at the intersection between political science, history and area studies. Mastering one of the Central European languages is requested, and if fieldwork includes a country in Asia, the idiom of this country should also be mastered.

A least three issues will be explored: the judicial writing of history; historians in the courtroom; the place of judicial matters in the public policies of history – in particular war crime trials and/or trials against political opponents. A consideration of the legal and institutional frameworks within which history is written will combine with a reflection on the political and social uses of history.

In the selection of case studies and the devising of research methods, the student will build upon the literature on entangled history, connected histories, and global history. The time frame of the topic will be closely tied to the construction of cases. Empirical research may focus on any segment of the 20th century.

Working Environment

The selected candidate will enrol in Sciences Po Paris’ doctoral programme and will be part of the Political science doctoral school. The doctoral student will work within the Center for International studies (CERI Sciences Po), CNRS, UMR 7050.

CERI is a multidisciplinary centre for research in the social sciences and humanities that brings together specialists of Russia, Central and Southeast Europe, and Asia – among others.

The PhD will be supervised by Dr. Habil. Nadège Ragaru, Sciences Po (CERI-CNRS).

The doctoral student will take part on the collective life and research activities of the center. 

Constraints and Risks

The doctoral contract includes an obligation to conduct fieldwork. The doctoral student will spend at least three months per year doing field research in order to collect empirical data (through participant observation, interviews, etc.). During these periods, the student will be hosted by the Centre français de recherches en sciences sociales (CEFRES), in Prague, Czech Republic. CEFRES is part of the network of French research institutes abroad (UMIFRE). It offers administrative and logistical support and constitutes a stimulating scientific environment, connected with both local and regional research networks. Depending on the case studies chosen, fieldwork in other countries may be required.

Profile

  • The candidate must hold a Master’s Degree in social sciences (history, anthropology, sociology, political science) with a specialization in Central and Southeast European studies and/or South Asian area studies. He/she must not be enrolled in another doctoral programme. Mastering one of the languages of Central Europe, Southern Europe and Eastern Europe is requested, and if fieldwork includes a country in Asia, the idiom of this country must also be known.
  • The doctoral thesis can be written in French or in English.

Conditions

  • The PhD is funded. The selected PhD candidate will sign a “contrat doctoral” granting 2135 euros (gross salary) per month for a period of three years from 1st of October 2019 to 30th of September 2022.
  • The PhD is funded by the CNRS and is a CNRS doctoral contract.
  • The PhD candidate will conduct his or her work based at the CERI – Sciences Po in Paris, France.

VÝHERCI CENY PLATFORMY CEFRES A CENY JACQUESE DERRIDY 2019

CEFRES MOBILITY GRANTS WINNERS – YEAR 2019-2020

The interdisciplinary selection jury of the CEFRES mobility grants auditioned 14 candidates on May 28, 2019. It congratulates all the candidates for the high quality of their file and their hearing.

After deliberating, it have decided:

  1. To give a one-year « Young fellow » grant to M. Eraldo Souza dos Santo (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne ), to support his research entitled “Désobéissance civile : Un essai de généalogie conceptuelle”.

Paul G. Keil: výzkum a CV

Paul absolvoval doktorské studium v oboru sociální antropologie. Jeho výzkum využívá teorie, které chápou poznání, činnost a kulturu jako sociálně-ekologické výsledky vyplývající z interakcí mezi organismem a prostředím. V letech 2007-2011 byl Paul součástí interdisciplinárního kognitivního vědeckého týmu, v rámci něhož vedl projekt zabývající se kolaborativní pamětí starších párů. Zkoumal, jak se paměť rozkládá v sociálních a materiálních vztazích. V roce 2010 vedl Paul etnografický výzkum o závodech honících psů, kde zkoumal jak se člověk a pes vzájemně doplňují, jejich specifické druhy výkonnosti integrované do mezidruhového rozloženého kognitivního systému. Postgraduální výzkum byl zaměřen na vícedruhovou etnografii a sociální antropologii vztahů mezi lidmi a slony v Assamu (severovýchodní Indie). Jednalo se o terénní práce financované Prime Minister’s Australia-Asia Endeavour Award. Obsáhlým cílem bylo vyzkoumat, jak se lidská prostředí, světové názory a praktiky vyvíjejí v koordinaci se životem slonů. Dále také konceptualizovat formy společenství člověk-slon nad rámec typické dynamiky konfliktu, soutěže a ovládání. Paul získal doktorát na Macquarie University v Austrálii, kde je také čestným postdoktorandem.

PROJEKT: Lovci prasat, honící psi, divoká prasata a další  prasečí aktéři: nadlidské vztahy vznikající během lovu v Austrálii

Paul jako člen výzkumného projektu TANDEM “Zdivočelí divočáci” provádí antropologickou studii o rekreačním lovu prasat psy v Austrálii. Projekt se jmenuje Lovci prasat, honící psi, divoká prasata a další  prasečí aktéři: nadlidské vztahy vznikající během lovu v Austrálii a bude zkoumat mezidruhové vztahy představující kulturu chovu prasat a širší historické, společenské a environmentální faktory, které tyto vztahy budují. Projekt má tři cíle. Za prvé, kritizovat vzniklou definici prasat jako divoké, invazivní a tedy “zabíjející” tvory a zkoumat vztah mezi lovem prasat a narušením postkoloniálních ekologických projektů zvířaty. Za druhé, etnografie vzájemně ovlivňujících se interakcí člověka, prasat a psů v činnostech souvisejících s lovem – například analýza toho, jak lovci chápou a jednají se zvířecími činiteli, a jak je genderová a třídní identita přijata tímto způsobem mezidruhového působení. Nakonec prací s epidemiology identifikovat sociálně-ekologické podmínky pro přenos zoonózy v lovu prasat. Antropologie totiž může dávat informace o strategiích řízení nemocí a pochopit, jak nemoc mění ovlivňování vztahů člověk-pes-prase.

The director and the researchers of the CEFRES express their support to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

The director and the researchers of the French Centre of Research in Humanities and Social Sciences (CEFRES) are deeply worried about the dismantlement threatening the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the biggest academic institution of the country. They express their full support to the president of the Academy, Mr. Laszlo Lovasz, and to the whole academic community of Hungary, concerned with the respect of academic freedom and intellectual independence.

One of the CEFRES’ main missions is to promote research in Humanities and Social Sciences and to build long-term cooperation with universities and academic institutions in the four Visegrad’s countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland). The CEFRES’ team is alarmed at the current discourse stigmatizing partners whose intellectual relevance and academic excellence cannot be questioned and at the succession of reforms aiming at weakening them. They express their full support to their colleagues of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, to the Central European University and to all the academic institutions which are currently threatened.

Giovanna Capponi: výzkum a CV

Percepce a politika správy divokých prasat ve střední Itálii

Giovanna je doktor v oboru sociální antropologie a její výzkum se specializuje na vztah člověka a životního prostředí, vztah člověk-zvíře, historickou a kulturní ekologii a “přírodní kulturu”. Během svého doktorského studia na Univerzitě v Roehamptonu v Londýně vedla rozsáhlý terénní výzkum, který byl zaměřen na praktiky obětování zvířat a vnímání životního prostředí v tradici afro-brazilského náboženství Candomblé. Tím otevřela novou perspektivu v oblasti antropologie rituálu, hmotné kultury a studií vztahu člověk-zvíře. Zúčastnila se také interdisciplinárního výzkumného projektu financovaného z AHRC s názvem “Cultural and Scientific Perception of Human Chicken Interaction”, který sdružil výzkumníky různých vědeckých disciplín a zaměřil se na význam drůbeže v lidských kulturách dříve a dnes.

V rámci programu TANDEM a jeho projektu s názvem “Zdivočelí divočáci”, zahajuje Giovanna druhý terénní výzkum věnující se správě divokých prasat ve středních Apeninách v Itálii.

Projekt: Percepce a politika správy divokých prasat ve střední Itálii

Cílem tohoto projektu je vytvořit perspektivu na vztahy mezi člověkem a životním prostředím a na sociologii vědy a zejména na to, jak se “vědecké” pojmy týkající se životního prostředí vzájemně prolínají a vznikají společně s kulturními praktikami a diskurzy. Především se zaměří na správu divokých prasat a divoké fauny v národních parcích střední Itálie (Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi and Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini) a ve venkovských oblastech, které je obklopují. Analýzou střetů mezi místními zemědělci, loveckými asociacemi, lesními správci, ochránci přírody a ekology, má tento výzkum v rámci týmu TANDEM za úkol vytvořit italskou etnografickou studii o vzájemném prolínání se “přírody” a evropské společnosti.
